June is Brain Injury Awareness Month

MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release – June 1, 2014
“Drive Only… Never Text” campaign helps create awareness on the dangers of texting while driving
Do you text when you drive? Here’s a simple message: “D.O.N.T.”!  June is Brain Injury Awareness month.
The Ontario Brain Injury Association, along with affiliated community brain injury associations across Ontario, are encouraging Ontarians to become more aware of the potential for brain injuries due to motor vehicle crashes caused by distracted driving – including driving while texting or talking on a cell phone.
The province-wide campaign will use radio public service announcements, posters, t-shirts, social media and other events to share the D.O.N.T. message. For information and resources about the D.O.N.T. campaign or to take the D.O.N.T. pledge, please visit www.idont.ca
According to the Ontario Alliance for Action on Brain Injury, approximately 18,000 brain injuries occur in Ontario each year.  In fact, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability for people under the age of 44 and kills more people under the age 20 than all other causes combined.
Brain injuries can range from mild to severe, but all brain injuries can have lasting effects. said Sadly, a brain injury is a lifelong condition with varying degrees of disability ranging from minor to those requiring complete 24/7 care. Those experiencing a traumatic brain injury require immediate care at a trauma centre, acute care in the hospital as necessary and intensive rehabilitation in a brain injury facility and often long term follow up by professionals in the field.
QUICK FACTS
  • Brain injury is the leading killer and disabler of people under the age of 44 and kills more people under the age 20 than any other causes combined. (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  • Acquired brain injury is 15 times more common than spinal cord injury, 30 times more common than breast cancer and 400 times more common than HIV/AIDS. (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  • 40 percent of Acquired Brain Injury survivors sustained their brain injury as a result of an automobile collision (2012 OBIA Impact Report)
  • Distracted driving is cited as a causal factor in 30 to 50 per cent of traffic collisions in Ontario, but is probably much higher due to under-reporting. (Ontario Provincial Police)
  • Texting while driving is the same as driving blind for 5 seconds at a time (VA. Tech Transportation Institute). In three seconds, at sixty kilometres per hour you travel fifty metres—that’s the distance across half a football field. (Ontario Ministry of Transportation)
  • In 2012, 83 people were killed in motor vehicle collisions within OPP jurisdictions in which distracted driving was a causal factor. (Ontario Provincial Police)
Also in time for June our friends at Parachute

is launched Stop the Clock to help make injury prevention the country’s #1 health issue.

We’re Stopping the Clock on distracted driving

We can’t ignore the scary statistics – distracted driving causes more serious injuries than drinking or speeding and Canada’s teens are particularly vulnerable.

Earlier today, Parachute joined with Laureen Harper and the federal minsters of health and transport to hear the tragic story of Josh Field, who died at age 17 as a result of distracted driving. Kathryn Field, Josh’s mother, shared her emotional story with 500 students at an Ottawa High School, and encouraged the Class of 2014 and teens across Canada to #PracticeSafeText.

We all have teens in our lives – sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, and cousins – and we need to make sure this NEVER happens again.

In Toronto, BIST has also launched a Brain Awareness Campaign this June:

They wanted to let you know about an awareness campaign that BIST is launching called areyouaware.ca

BIST has built a website dedicated to brain injury awareness.

BIST will be at 4 hub TTC stations on June 11th during the morning rush hour to hand out stickers and cards.  They are also sending out lapel pins with the logo to Toronto city counsellors, government officials and TV personalities to help raise awareness.

Dear Friend:

Happy New Year!

BIAPH’s first fundraiser of the year is our annual bowling event with all proceeds directed to our support groups.  We need your support to keep our current groups going and to expand the groups to new locations to make them easily accessible to clients in our vast region..  A common feedback from our members are how appreciative they are of coming to “a safe place” where they are understood and accepted with no need to explain the common struggles and challenges they face.

We are counting on your help.  Here is what you can do:

  • Put a team together.  Bowling is always more fun with friends or colleagues invite them to join you & support your efforts!
  • Register your team or reserve a lane. Please complete the registration form, mail, scan & email us at biaph@biaph.com  or call us at 905 823 2221. You can also register through our website using PayPal. Remember if each of your team members collect a minimum of $50.00 in pledges, the registration fee of $25.00 per bowler is waived.
  • Collect pledge money. We are asking each bowler to try to raise $100.  All you need to do is ask 20 people to pledge $5.00 each.

Help us reach our goal to raise $ 10,000

THANK YOU to everyone who have supported us in the past through sponsorship, donations, and event participation.

Only 20 lanes reserved; sign up early to avoid disappointment!

2015 launch date is Friday, June 5th from 10 to 11 am at Lancaster Public School, 7425 Netherwood Road, Mississauga, ON L4T2N7

“Helmets on Kids” is an initiative, started by the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association in London, Ontario in 2002. The goal of the project is to donate bicycle helmets and to promote education and awareness on proper bicycle helmet use.

The program came to Peel Region in 2008 with the purchase of  the first 500 helmets

Helmets on Kids – Peel is a joint venture of the Brain Injury Association of Peel and Halton, the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, the Peel Children’s SafetyVillage, Peel Regional Police, Peel Public Health and Peel District School Board. The kick off event and safety assemblies are held every June to coincide with Brain Injury Awareness Month.

The Helmets on Kids Program is an initiative that started six years ago, to provide helmets to children who are unable to obtain them due to financial restrictions.
·
All of the students are either in grade three or four. In order to be as sensitive as possible, names of students who were pre-selected by the school staff or administration have been recorded on slips of paper and entered in a class/grade “fixed” draw that takes place several days before the scheduled grade assemblies. However, all students in the given classes/grades are told that ALL students’ names have been entered in the draw. For all intents and purposes, each of the pre-selected students appears to have “won” a helmet in the draw.
For each of the schools participating in the Helmets On Kids Initiative 2015, they will be receiving a 25 minute educational assembly during May and June . This assembly will be put on by the staff of the Safety Village.

HUGE SUCCESS!!!! THANK YOU

$

The 11th Annual BIAPH Bowl-a-thon was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who came out to join in the fun. Special thank you to “Team Special Ed” who for the second year running claimed the “Biggest Heart Trophy”! Highest individual score went to Chris Lamour – with a score of 195. In addition to his awesome bowling skills, Chris also donates his time to facilitate  our Brampton support group, way to go Chris! This year’s champs were “Team Sokoloff” with an average team score of 117. Paul Szoldra once again claimed the “Best Form Trophy” and his team  “Szoldra and Friends” won the trophies for the team with the highest spirit.

A good time was had by all.  It was a sold-out event with all twenty lanes booked. Much appreciation to our Food & Beverage Sponsor, Investors Group, all the  Lane Sponsors,  and to everyone who submitted  pledges. Thank you to everyone who donated event tickets and  items for the  silent auction. Last but not least to our volunteers for helping to make this event a success. Thank you to the winner of the 50/50 draw who very generously donated the $413 jackpot back.

We came in just short of our $10,000 goal, you can make it happen by pledging NOW!!!

The “Pledge on Line Now” button  will remain active, if you don’t have a specific team or bowler to support, just indicate “BIAPH”

Your support means a lot to many people, thank you again, see you next year!
